THE BROLIGARCHY

Investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr has been writing about technofascism and the acceleration of technology-fuelled political power for many years. In 2024 she pointed to the confluence of digital technologies and US state authoritarianism by coining the term ‘the Broligarchy’ to define the alliance of Trump, Silicon Valley and a global axis of autocracy.

Having traced the interconnected lines between global authoritarianism and Silicon Valley’s billionaires, Cadwalladr warns that we are approaching a “post-state" future where corporations are becoming more powerful than nation states and the tech bros are being given free rein to write the rules.

This ‘once unimaginable geopolitical ordering’ was highlighted at the 2026 G7 summit in France, where the CEOs of America’s dominant AI companies, OpenAI's Sam Altman, Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis and Anthropic's Dario Amodei were treated as if they themselves were heads of state and given a seat at the table beside the leaders of the world's seven most powerful industrialised nations.
